87 Mårten Lax (?) 1467 or 1746. The shape of the shield suggests medieval origin, but the numbers allow interpretations of either year. It could belong to an ancient family Lax of Pikis, introduced as nobility in 1564. The older alternative would make this the oldest identified carving on Hauensuoli. However, another vaguely visible, unnamed and partly overwritten carving has been interpreted to be of 1508 or even of 1505, and as such considered the oldest, given that the “Lax” would be of the latter date 1746.
In the pictures below the fish is diagonal but swimming in different directions. But is this the oldest one? Further below the perhaps older inscription is illustrated.

The unnamed coat of arms below was seen by Hausen as dated 1505 but by Boström as 1506. Birgitta Ekström concluded it to be 1508, which she painted upon cleaning it in 1983. It could well have been overgrown with lichen (and certainly not painted) in 1654, when Hendrik von Dantzig hacked his name over it, as seen in lower left corner of the photos. The year was painted 08 by Ekström, who raised the question: “Could this be the oldest one?”
Not only the numbers but also the top of the shield (a lily, a crown, or nothing) is shown with variations as painted. This example illustrates the problem of interpretation of these shallow carvings when painting them for clarity.
