Torsten Torstensson Stålhandske

51 This carving is separated from the guided path on the hard-to-reach plateau towards the pilot station tower.

Torsten Stålhandske was born 1594 in eastern Uusimaa region. He made a military career advancing to general in the 30-years War. There he commanded the Finnish dragon regiment named Hakkapeliitat.

The carving was made in 1622, when Torsten as an ensign lay here awaiting favourable winds on his way to join King Gustaf II Adolf´s army in Livonia. From that same year we find several carvings of his fellow officers, which suggests the wait had been long. On the lower photo his comrade-in-arms Erasmus Hara´s carving is an example of this. Torsten died 1644 and is buried in the Turku Cathedral together with his wife in a side chapel to the right if the main entrance.
