Water level measured 1883 by Carl Korsman

328 When Hanko town was founded in 1874 the Hauensuoli inlet had lost its role as a safe harbour, having become too shallow due to the rise of our land mass. However, there are a few newer inscriptions on the island. Carl Korsman (1829–1907) measured the water level in 1883.

Further marks of the water level, one from 1983 on the same cliff bear witness to the elevation of the land, or rather how much deeper and wider the inlet was in the centuries of the oldest carvings.
